Two Row Bind Off

A bind off worked over two rows for a different finish.

3 min video

The two row bind off is worked in two passes. On the first row you knit one, purl one and pass only the knit stitches over, so purl stitches stay on the needle. On the second row you slip them one at a time and pass each one over the next.

That leaves a row of elongated stitches along the top with small holes between them. The edge has a nice amount of stretch and is decorative as well, an eyelet type edge.

It suits afghans, and the holes are handy for attaching fringe. One thing to watch: you end with one live stitch, so sew it down into the work with a piece of waste yarn.

  1. Knit one, purl one, shown on the needles

    1 Knit one, purl one

Knit the first stitch, then purl the second stitch.

  2. Pass the knit stitch over, shown on the needles

2 Pass the knit stitch over

Lift the knit stitch over the purl stitch and off the needle. The purl stitch stays.

  3. Then keep going across, shown on the needles

    3 Then keep going across

Knit one, purl one, pass the knit stitch over the purl. You only ever pass the knit stitches over, so stitches stay on the needle. Work across until only purl stitches are left on the working needle.

  4. Turn and slip two, shown on the needles

    4 Turn and slip two

Turn the work around. Slip the first two stitches purlwise onto the working needle, then pass the first stitch over the second.

  5. Slip one, pass one over, shown on the needles

5 Slip one, pass one over

Slip the next stitch purlwise and pass the first stitch over it. Repeat that all the way across the row.

  6. Secure the last stitch, shown on the needles

    6 Secure the last stitch

You end up with one live stitch at the end. Take a piece of waste yarn and sew it down into the work.
