Provisional Cast Ons
A temporary edge, so you can come back and knit the other way.
A provisional cast on is one you mean to undo. The stitches start on waste yarn, you knit the piece, and later you pull the waste yarn out and have live stitches to knit in the other direction, graft to another piece, or fold into a hem.
The crochet version is the general one, made with a hook and waste yarn. The provisional Italian gives you a tubular rib edge later, when you come back to it.
